Setting Up Your Wine Pairing Experience

This dining experience is more than just about the wines or the food. To make the most of it, prepare your tasting station with care, ensuring each dish and wine is presented elegantly to captivate both the eyes and the palate. Keep the preparation simple to highlight the primary taste components of each dish.

To get started and showcase the impact of food and wine pairing, you'll require assembling a few food items, and a choice of five wines.

As you embark on your wine pairing experience, encourage your guests to take their time, savouring each sip and bite as they uncover the intricate nuances and harmonious combinations.

The Wines

For this dinner, we opted for a variety of wines: a Feteasca Alba, a Feteasca Neagra, an organic Rosé, a Sauvignon Blanc, and a dessert wine (Tamaioasa Romaneasca). Just as you have the freedom to select any foods for the tasting, the choice of wines is entirely up to you.

This article will centre on Romanian wines, and our selection is determined by their widespread appeal amongst Romanian wine lovers.

Fetească Albă

  • Pairing: Begin your gastronomic adventure with the crisp and refreshing Fetească Albă. Well chilled, it harmoniously accompanies fish and seafood, spicy dishes and salads. It is also an excellent aperitif served on its own.
  • Romanian dish pairing: Its vibrant acidity and delicate floral notes make it an ideal companion for traditional Romanian appetisers such as zacusca (roasted vegetable spread).

Fetească Neagră

  • Pairing: Dive into the rich flavours of Fetească Neagră, a Romanian red wine with soft tannins and hints of dark berries. You can easily serve this wine on its own or with lamb, roasted beef, game or spicy dishes. It is delicious at the end of the meal with fermented cheese.

  • Romanian dish pairing: Complement its bold character with hearty Romanian dishes like sarmale (cabbage rolls stuffed with minced meat and rice) or meatballs.

Rosé Organic

  • Pairing: Indulge in the delicate charm of Rose Organic, a blush wine with notes of strawberry and watermelon. Its refreshing acidity and subtle fruitiness make it a delightful companion on its own or together with a variety of dishes, from light salads with grilled chicken to vegetarian options.
  • Romanian dish pairing: If you're in the mood for cooking, this Rosé goes perfectly with eggplant spread or butter cake.

Sauvignon Blanc

  • Pairing: Experience the vibrant Sauvignon Blanc, bursting with tropical fruit aromas and a zesty finish that goes well with seafood or poultry, amongst others.
  • Romanian dish pairing: This versatile wine complements a variety of Romanian dishes, including the traditional ciorbă de burtă (tripe soup).

Tămâioasă Românească (Sweet)

  • Pairing: Conclude your culinary odyssey with the aromatic allure of Tămâioasă Românească, a white wine with enchanting notes of lychee and honey. Our only dessert wine, it goes excellently with pastry and sweets, or alongside sweet Asian food.
  • Romanian dish pairing: This wine is the perfect addition to your dessert, and, should you wish to cook, try the walnut rolls. However, if you don't have as much of a sweet tooth, you can also pair it with brie, raisin bread or sweet cheese buns.

Enjoy Your Wine Pairing Experience

Arrange all food items on a single platter, excluding the dessert. Dive into the tasting experience by exploring each food alongside each wine. To truly capture your findings, note down your impressions as you go and rate each pairing based on your personal preference. Look at the harmony of each combination—whether it's a match made in culinary heaven or falls flat on the palate.

Experiment with various combinations to discover the perfect match for your palate.

Conclusion

Keep in mind that continuously switching between various wines and flavours may influence your preferences, due to palate fatigue affecting your perception. In simpler terms, this isn't a scientifically rigorous analysis or the ultimate authority on food and wine pairings, but a fun way to dive into the world of Romanian wine and food pairing.
